The space above the toilet is often the only unused wall space in a small bathroom. A freestanding unit can add a cabinet’s worth of storage there, as long as its legs clear the toilet and its top clears whatever hangs above it. Most listings only give the outside size. Every unit here also publishes the inside width between its legs, which is the number that decides whether it fits.
Quick picks
- Narrowest footprint: Costway Over The Toilet Storage Cabinet (23.5” wide, 8.5” deep), with glass doors.
- Closed cabinet storage: RiverRidge Brookfield, the widest leg clearance here at 25”.
- Low clearance (a medicine cabinet or light above the toilet): RiverRidge Amery, the shortest here at 58”.
- Open shelving: RiverRidge Amery, with two open shelves and a drop-down compartment.
- Simplest / budget: RiverRidge Amery, with open shelves and one compartment instead of cabinet doors, in the budget tier along with the Costway.

What to look for
- Inside width vs. the tank and base. The clearance width is the space between the legs. It has to beat the widest point of your toilet, and that point is sometimes the base near the floor rather than the tank.
- Clearance height vs. the tank lid. The lowest shelf has to clear the top of the tank, with room to lift the lid if you ever need to.
- Depth vs. round or elongated bowls. The unit sits back over the tank, so bowl shape matters less than the tank’s depth. Check that the unit’s clearance depth covers your tank.
- Height to the lowest fixture. Compare the unit’s overall height to whatever is above the toilet. This is where a shorter unit like the Amery earns its place.
- A rust-resistant finish. Metal racks need powder coating or a rust-resistant finish in a steamy bathroom. Wood-based units need splashes wiped up so they don’t swell.
- Leg and crossbar placement vs. the supply line. Most units have a crossbar low across the back. If it sits at the same height as your shutoff valve or supply line, the unit won’t push back against the wall. Each pick below lists where its crossbar sits.
Renter-friendly notes
All three units stand on the floor, and all three ship with anti-tip or wall-anchoring hardware, and using it means one or two small screws into the wall behind the unit. That’s a small hole, but it is a hole: check your lease, and fill it before you move out.

FAQ
Will an over-the-toilet unit fit my toilet?
Compare two numbers. The unit’s clearance width (the inside width between its legs) has to be wider than the widest part of the toilet it straddles, which is usually the tank but sometimes the base near the floor. Its clearance height has to be taller than the top of your tank lid. Leave some room on both.
Do I have to anchor it to the wall?
All three units here ship with wall-anchoring or anti-tip hardware. Using that hardware means driving a small screw into the wall. Tall units are top-heavy once the shelves are loaded, so if your lease doesn’t allow screws, ask your landlord before you skip it.
Does it matter if my toilet is round or elongated?
Less than you’d think. An elongated bowl sticks out further in front, but an over-the-toilet unit sits back over the tank. What decides the fit is the widest point the legs have to straddle and the tank’s height and depth.
Will a metal unit rust in a bathroom?
Bare or chrome-plated steel can rust in a humid bathroom. Look for a powder-coated or rust-resistant finish, and wipe up standing water. All three picks here list engineered wood or MDF instead, which won’t rust but can swell if it stays wet, so wipe up splashes on those too.
