Best Slim Rolling Carts for Narrow Gaps (Beside the Fridge, Washer or Vanity)

The gap beside a fridge, washer, or vanity is usually a few inches of wasted space that can hold spices, cleaning spray, or extra toilet paper, as long as the cart actually fits. Width decides that, so this guide is organized by width: measure your gap, subtract at least 1/2”, and shop the band that matches.

Measure first

In this guide, width means the side of the cart that has to fit into the gap, and depth means how far the cart runs back into it. Retailers don’t always label them that way, so each product below notes which side goes into the gap.

What to look for

• Width at baseboard height. Baseboards and trim usually make the bottom of a gap narrower than the top, and the bottom is exactly where a cart’s wheels sit.
• Depth vs. what it will block. A cart that’s longer than your gap is deep will stick out into the walkway. A cart that’s much shorter leaves space at the back you can’t reach.
• Locking wheels. Useful if the cart could get bumped, but none of the carts in this guide list them. Plan to park the cart fully inside the gap.
• A handle. Something to grip makes it much easier to pull a loaded cart out of a tight gap. The Brightroom cart’s listing mentions side handles; for the others, check the product photos.
• Tip resistance when loaded. Tall, narrow carts get top-heavy fast. Keep heavy items on the bottom shelf, and stay under any load rating the retailer lists.
• Material near a washer. Laundry rooms and bathrooms get damp. VESKEN is polypropylene plastic, and IKEA presents it as a bathroom cart. For metal carts, wipe up spills so they don’t sit on the frame.

FAQ

Will a cart fit if my gap is exactly the cart’s width?

Technically, but it will scrape and stick every time you pull it out. Leave at least 1/2 inch of total width, measured at baseboard height, since baseboards usually make the bottom of a gap the narrowest point.

Is it OK to put a rolling cart next to a fridge?

Usually, as long as it doesn’t block the fridge door from opening fully and doesn’t cover any vents. Some refrigerators call for side clearance, so check your fridge’s manual for its recommended spacing before filling that gap.

Can a slim cart hold canned goods or detergent?

Only up to its listed load. IKEA lists 9 lb per shelf for the black NISSAFORS, 15 lb per shelf for the white NISSAFORS, and 13 lb total for VESKEN. The Brightroom and Container Store carts don’t list a load rating, so keep heavy items like full detergent jugs to a minimum on those.

Do I need locking wheels?

They help if the cart sits somewhere it could get bumped, but none of the five carts here list locking casters. Keep the heaviest items on the bottom shelf and park the cart fully inside the gap so it isn’t easy to knock loose.
