Plenty of older apartments and converted bedrooms come without a closet. You can still build one out of freestanding pieces. The trick is to split your clothes by how you store them (hanging, folded, and off-season) and give each group its own spot. These 12 ideas are grouped that way.
Every idea has a renter note. Where we name a product, we checked its dimensions on the retailer’s own page and note the date on the card. We compared specs and listings. We didn’t test anything ourselves.
Quick picks
- Open garment rack: IKEA RIGGA, with height adjustable from 49 5/8” to 68 7/8” and a listed max load of 77 lb.
- Covered wardrobe: SIMPLIFY Portable Closet, 36” wide and 63” tall with a steel frame and a non-woven fabric cover.
- Folded clothes in a narrow spot: IKEA STORKLINTA 5-drawer dresser, 15 3/4” wide.
- Behind the door: IKEA VALASJÖN hanger, for doors up to 1 1/2” thick.
- Off-season clothes: under-bed storage, matched to your bed height in our under-bed storage guide.
Measure first
What to look for
- Hanging height vs. your longest item. A rack’s height isn’t its hanging length. Subtract the hanger and check that long coats still clear the floor or the shelf below.
- Width vs. how many clothes you own. Count the hangers you use now. A rack that’s too short crams everything together, and crushed clothes wrinkle.
- A listed weight capacity. Some racks and wardrobes publish one and some don’t. If a listing doesn’t give one, don’t assume it can hold a full closet’s worth of winter coats.
- Tip risk. Tall, narrow pieces (wardrobes, dressers) are the ones that ship with anti-tip hardware. Low, wide pieces rarely need it.
- Open or covered. Open racks are faster to use. Covers keep dust off and hide clutter.
Renter-friendly notes
Most of these ideas are freestanding and leave no marks. One product here needs attention: the STORKLINTA dresser has to be anchored to the wall before more than one drawer will open. Anchoring means a screw into the wall. Check your lease, and fill the hole before you move out.
Hanging clothes
1. A freestanding garment rack
An open rack is the closest thing to a closet rod you can add without tools. Put it against the wall with the most floor space, ideally away from a radiator or a sunny window that could fade fabric.

IKEA RIGGA Clothes Rack, White
Best for: A bedroom with at least 44 inches of open wall — the height adjusts from 49 5/8 to 68 7/8 inches, so it works for shirts or long coats, and IKEA lists a 77 lb max load
Dimensions 43 3/4"W x 20 1/8"D; height adjustable 49 5/8"–68 7/8"
- Max load 77 lb
- Locks at 6 height levels
- Casters included
- Bottom rack holds boxes or about 4 pairs of shoes
- Rail ends double as hooks
- Powder-coated steel
Specs verified 2026-09-29
Renter note: Freestanding on casters, no installation.
2. A covered portable wardrobe
If your clothes are out in the open in a studio or a bedroom you work in, a fabric-covered wardrobe hides them and keeps dust off.

SIMPLIFY White Portable Closet (36 in. W x 63 in. H), 4062-WHITE
Best for: Rooms that need a closet you can close — 36 inches wide and 63 inches tall, with a breathable fabric cover over a steel frame
Dimensions 36"W x 19.7"D x 63"H (The Home Depot's spec table lists the 36" and 19.7" figures as depth and width)
- Steel frame with a thick non-woven fabric cover
- Breathable cover keeps dust off hanging clothes
- Room for suits, dresses, jackets and shirts
- No wheels; assembly required
Specs verified 2026-10-30
Renter note: Freestanding, no installation. The Home Depot’s listing doesn’t give a weight capacity or mention anti-tip hardware, so keep heavy coats to a reasonable number.
3. Hanging shelves on the rack
A hanging fabric organizer turns part of a rod into cubbies for sweaters, jeans, and T-shirts, so one rack can hold both hanging and folded clothes.

IKEA SKUBB Organizer with 6 Compartments, White
Best for: Adding six cubbies of folded clothes to a garment rack or wardrobe rod — it's 13 3/4 inches wide, so it takes up only a slice of the rail
Dimensions 13 3/4"W x 17 3/4"D x 49 1/4"H
- Hangs from a rod with a hook-and-loop fastener
- 6 open compartments
- Folds flat when not in use
- 100% polyester (min. 90% recycled)
Specs verified 2026-09-29
Renter note: Hangs from the rod with a hook-and-loop fastener. No installation.
4. Hooks over the door
The back of the bedroom door can hold a robe, a bag, and tomorrow’s outfit. Look for a hanger that sits over the top of the door, not one that screws in.
IKEA VALASJÖN Hanger for Door
Best for: Doors up to 1 1/2 inches thick — it hangs over the top edge, with clear pads where it rests against the door
Dimensions 13 1/2"W x 5"H; fits door thickness 1 1/2"
- Hangs over the top edge of the door
- Clear plastic pads protect the door from scratches
- Powder-coated steel
Specs verified 2026-09-29
Renter note: Hangs over the door with no screws or adhesive. Check that the door still closes and latches with the hanger in place. Our measuring guide explains how to check a door.
5. A tension rod across an alcove
If your room has a nook, an alcove, or a narrow gap between two walls, a heavy-duty tension rod can act as a closet rod. Choose one whose adjustable range puts your wall-to-wall measurement near the middle, and keep the load light, because tension rods aren’t built for a full closet.
Renter note: Tension-fit, with no screws. It can mark paint if overtightened, so tighten only until it holds.
Folded clothes
6. A narrow dresser
A tall, narrow dresser fits between a bed and a wall where a standard dresser won’t, and gives you drawers for everything that doesn’t hang.

IKEA STORKLINTA 5-Drawer Dresser, White
Best for: A slot about 16 inches wide beside a bed or door — five drawers in a 15 3/4-inch-wide footprint. It's in the premium tier for this article
Dimensions 15 3/4"W x 18 7/8"D x 47 1/4"H; drawer inside depth 15 3/4"
- 5 drawers
- Anchor & Unlock: must be anchored to the wall to open more than one drawer at a time
- Wall-anchoring kit included
Specs verified 2026-09-29
Renter note: STORKLINTA uses IKEA’s Anchor & Unlock system. It has to be anchored to the wall to open more than one drawer at a time, and a wall-anchoring kit is included. That means drilling into the wall. Ask your landlord first, and fill the hole before you move out.
7. A storage bench at the foot of the bed
A bench with open storage underneath gives you a place to sit while you put on shoes, plus a shelf for folded sweaters or a couple of lidded boxes.

IKEA PERJOHAN Bench with Storage, Pine
Best for: The foot of a full or queen bed — 39 3/8 inches long and only 11 inches deep, with open storage below the seat
Dimensions 39 3/8"L x 11"D x 17 3/4"H
- Open storage space underneath the seat
- Tested for 243 lb
- Solid pine
- Cut-out handle for moving it
Specs verified 2026-09-29
Renter note: Freestanding, no installation.
8. Lidded boxes on open shelves
A bookcase you already own can double as a dresser. Use matching lidded boxes or fabric bins so the shelves look tidy and dust stays out. Measure the shelf depth and height between shelves before you buy bins.
Renter note: Freestanding. Tall bookcases often ship with anti-tip hardware, so check what yours came with.
Off-season and bulky clothes
9. Under-bed storage
The space under the bed is the best place for clothes you won’t need for months. Which container fits depends on your bed’s clearance, so we sorted the options by height in our guide to the best under-bed storage by bed height.
Renter note: Freestanding containers, no installation. If you need more room, bed risers slide under the legs without tools.
10. Vacuum or compression bags for bulky items
Winter coats, puffer jackets, and spare bedding take up far less room compressed. Pack them flat, then store them under the bed or on top of a wardrobe. Check the care label before compressing down or wool.
Renter note: No installation.
Shoes and accessories
11. Shoes under the hanging clothes
The floor under a garment rack is usually wasted. A low shoe rack or a row of shallow bins fits under short hanging items like shirts. RIGGA has a bottom rack built in that IKEA says holds about four pairs of shoes.
Renter note: Freestanding, no installation.
12. A leaning ladder for scarves, bags, and tomorrow’s outfit
A blanket ladder leaned against the wall holds scarves, belts, and the clothes you’ll wear again before washing, the ones that otherwise end up on a chair.
Renter note: Leaning ladders stand on their own, but some ship with a wall bracket. Check the listing if you want a truly no-drill setup.
FAQ
What’s the cheapest way to store clothes without a closet?
An open garment rack plus a few bins. A basic rack like IKEA’s RIGGA is in the budget tier, holds hanging clothes up top, and has a bottom rack for shoes or boxes. Add under-bed storage for off-season clothes and you’ve covered most of what a small closet would hold.
Should I get an open rack or a covered wardrobe?
An open rack is easier to reach into and takes up less visual space if your clothes are tidy. A covered wardrobe keeps dust off and hides the clutter, which matters more in a studio or a bedroom you also work in. Check the height either way: long coats and dresses need the tallest hanging space.
Do I need to anchor a wardrobe or dresser to the wall?
Tall, narrow furniture can tip, especially with drawers open or a heavy load up top. IKEA’s STORKLINTA dresser won’t open more than one drawer at a time until it’s anchored, and some wardrobes ship with an anti-tip strap — check the listing for any tall piece you buy. Anchoring means a screw into the wall, so check your lease and fill the hole before you move out.
How do I keep clothes on an open rack from getting dusty?
Rotate off-season clothes into lidded under-bed storage, and keep only what you’re wearing now on the rack. For anything that hangs for months, a breathable garment bag helps.
